Our Youth vs. Today's Kids

I've been doing a lot of reflecting lately, especially in the quiet moments between notifications and the ever-present hum of the digital age. It's hard not to compare my childhood, growing up as a millennial, to the experiences of kids today.

When the final bell rang at school, around 2 or 3 pm, our day was far from over. We traded textbooks for skateboards, classrooms for playgrounds, and lessons for adventures. Those after-school hours were filled with scraped knees, laughter, and memories made without the constant distraction of digital devices. We were present, soaking in every moment, unburdened by the constant buzz of notifications or the urge to capture everything for an online audience.

Contrast this with the current scenario, where children are perpetually tethered to their devices. Yet, in our household, we've made a conscious choice. Our kids' tablets remain untouched daily, collecting dust in a closet with dead batteries. Their sole purpose? Providing entertainment on long airplane journeys or road trips extending beyond a few hours. It's our little way of ensuring they experience the world firsthand rather than through a screen.

While technology has its merits, and I'm not dismissing its role in education or connectivity, I can't help but ponder the potential repercussions of this constant digital immersion. Are today's children getting the chance to develop essential life skills? The kind of skills that are nurtured when you're out playing with friends, negotiating turns on the swing, or just being alone with your thoughts.

There's a delicate balance to strike. While we cannot entirely insulate our kids from the digital era's influences, we can create pockets of screen-free time, much like our after-school adventures. These moments can be instrumental in shaping their understanding of the world and their place in it.

I'd love to hear your perspective on this. It's a journey, and sharing insights can only make the path more transparent for all of us.
