The Entrepreneur's Legacy: Planting Trees for Future Shade

At 38 years old, I reflect on a journey that began when I was 25. Back then, I was navigating life's challenges as a newlywed, and my path was far from ordinary. This week, a quote I heard on a podcast deeply resonated: "Blessed is he who plants trees under whose shade he will never sit." This powerful saying encapsulates the essence of what it means to be an entrepreneur. As a husband, a father, and a business owner, I've realized that running one's own business is an arduous journey, demanding late nights, relentless multitasking, and an unwavering commitment. Much like life's challenges, it's a journey that has its share of uphill battles.

I am not a hero; I am just like you. I have faced my own set of challenges, both personal and professional. But just as I planted the seeds of change in my life all those years ago, I am now planting the seeds of a business, hoping to create a legacy for my family and future generations.

I just want to share my experiences and insights with fellow entrepreneurs navigating the same path—those who, like me, are planting trees for future shade. One valuable lesson I've learned is the importance of giving people around you a chance to take on roles or tasks they might not be experts at but can handle to the best of their abilities.

I was hired at LRG Clothing in September 2008, starting as a catalog designer. I vividly remember sitting outside Jonas Bevacqua's office, one of the founders, and for whatever reason, he pulled me in after some time working there and asked if I could design websites. Without hesitation, I confidently said YES. He handed me a piece of paper and a pencil, and within minutes, I sketched out what an ideal site would look like. From there, he asked me to produce it.

A few days later, I flew up to Seattle to my friend Jostin Darlington, and within about a week, we built a site. I returned with more responsibility and the confidence that I could tackle anything thrown my way. Over the years, I continued to put myself in positions where I said yes to more, even when I wasn't sure I could do it. I knew I would always find a way.

With age, I've learned the pitfalls and positives of this approach. But more than anything, I've honed my ability to be resourceful under pressure. Sadly, Jonas Bevacqua passed away in 2011, less than a week after I left LRG for a new opportunity. His memory remains a powerful force in my life, one of the most formidable people on a long list who gave me a chance to be 1% better today than I was yesterday. His willingness to trust in my potential and provide growth opportunities has left an indelible mark on my entrepreneurial journey.

Let's face it – sleep often takes a back seat when you're an entrepreneur. Countless nights have been spent burning the midnight oil, balancing family commitments with business demands. But the lack of sleep is a price we willingly pay for the passion that drives us. Those late hours are investments in our dreams, and our dedication to our work makes those sleepless nights worth it.

Balancing family, work, and entrepreneurship feels like walking a tightrope. But remember, our choices are rooted in creating a better life for our loved ones. Being a spouse and a parent while running a business means making sacrifices and setting an example for our children.

The actual value of entrepreneurship lies in the relationships we build and our impact on our clients. Converting our passion into a profession and witnessing the positive change we bring to others is incredibly fulfilling. Each client we serve, problem we solve, and milestone we reach is a testament to our dedication and hard work. The satisfaction of making a difference is unmatched.

Running your own business demands unwavering resilience. There will be setbacks, failures, and moments of doubt. Yet, these challenges are where we find our true strength and determination. They shape our character and our businesses.

Running your own business is undeniably challenging. It pushes you to your limits and tests your resolve. But within the chaos, you'll discover moments of clarity and purpose that make it all worthwhile. Embrace the sleepless nights, cherish the balancing act, and relish the rewards. Remember, you're crafting a legacy and inspiring others to pursue their dreams through your journey as an entrepreneur. Keep pushing forward; the pursuit is a testament to your strength and resilience.
